young weavers from across the country’s Hindi-speaking
belt in design, basic English, collaborative interactions with
their markets, and managing, end to end, the many facets
of their business. In other words, the goal is to slowly link
them directly with their markets, phasing out the traditional
middlemen who swallow much of their profits.
Currently, looks as though the ubiquitous WhatsApp factor
will play a big role in this transition period. So far almost
80 young weavers from 10 different states of India’s Hindi-
speaking belt have passed through The Handloom School and
begun their journey towards an independent weaving business
for the Indian and International markets. Twenty six of them
are from Maheshwar.
