“Y
ou are not a dyer. You are a
magician,” was the response of
the Japanese women and men
in the audience, in the age group of 10 to
hundred years, when they attended my lecture
demonstration on tie-dyeing in 2010 in Tokyo.
They exclaimed that the thousands of dots,
creating a pattern on a fabric, did not appear
to be hand-worked, but it was as if I had
presented a readymade fabric before their eyes!
They said what I had done was unbelievable!
I was delighted with their responses as I take
great pride in spreading awareness of the
technique and beauty of the craft of tie-dye.
The traditional tie-dye technique
and all that goes into creating the
colourful Lehariya textile.
