The quality of the tie-dye technique depends on the fineness
of the knots, the number of knots, the number of dyes used,
and the intricacy of the motifs/pattern created in the different
sections of the fabric. An intricately worked saree can have
1000 dots in a 12 by 12 inch section, with each dot the size of
a mustard seed. In 2002, I created a Mothara silk saree in 32
colour bands composed of two million dots created with natural
dyes. It took me a year to complete.
