The traditional weavers of Banaras would
welcome technology as long as it keeps the
ethos and beauty of traditional weaves alive,
increases their productivity, reduces the manual
labour they put in to weave and increases
their income. Even for the jacquard loom, a
weaver has to put in a lot of effort. He has to
press the pedal with his foot for eight hours.
If the loom can be modified by integrating an
electronic device to reduce the tedium it will
benefit weavers. If the government can provide
a subsidy for buying looms, it would be of
immense help to the weavers.
My grandfather being a founder member of
Paramparik Karigar, along with craftsmen
in different places and with Roshan ammaji
started a journey which is commendable. We
craftspersons got respect and money from this
organisation. In addition, we got people who
valued and liked our work and gave the right
amount of money to help us thrive. Today,
we cherish the many things this organisation
has taught us. My family and I will always
be grateful to Paramparik Karigar. I hope in
the future too we can achieve success in our
togetherness. This organisation has given us
an identity and helped us stay up to date with
the outside world. It has also established a
respectable place for weavers in society. We are
all grateful to Paramparik Karigar. A heartfelt
thank you.
