Paramparik Karigar
At Paramparik Karigar, spreading awareness of our traditional
crafts and keeping them alive is just as important as maintaining
the economic sustainability of engaging in these crafts. To achieve
this, Paramparik Karigar conducts regular workshops by master
craftsmen that are open to public, including special editions for
schools and colleges.
This year Paramparik Karigar acquired quite a few feathers
in its cap. Five crafts, namely, Shibori, Bagh, Dabu, Bandhini
and Ajrakh were showcased at the 2017 Lakme Fashion Week
in the ‘Craft is Cool’ segment. Our master craftsmen worked
with young designers to astounding effect, and it was a proud
moment for Paramparik Karigar when they walked the ramp with
their creations. Paramparik Karigar will also be participating in
the French Embroidery Programme, in Brittany, France. Four
expert embroiderers, practitioners of Soof, Ahir, Rabari and
Kantha respectively, will be exhibiting their work and conducting
workshops at the event, which aims to shine the spotlight on
embroidery techniques common to both the countries. At the
NCPA, to celebrate the handloom, Paramparik Karigar has joined
hands with the brilliant Bharatanatyam dancer Malavika Sarukkai to
present Thari – The Loom, a dance recital, which will be followed
by a textiles-only exhibition in December. Culture is the identity
of our people; traditional arts and crafts its manifestation. Those
arts and crafts are our heritage. We display them, wear them and
through them, express ourselves. We are constantly seeking them to
fulfil this desire for self-expression. Paramparik Karigar could well
be the place where the search ends.
